A cyclone killed 242 people and left all of southern Bangladesh cut the country before moving inland and losing strength Friday, according to authorities. Tropical Sidr roared across the southwestern coast late Thursday with driving rain and high waves, generating an increase of 4 feet of water has left few areas and some islands located under water, according to Nahid Sultana, an official of a control room of the cyclone in the capital, Dhaka.

With winds over 100 mph, the hurricane that hit the lower edges furious aqueous southern Bangladesh on Thursday night, downed trees, sent towers mobile crashing and swept away houses of mud and straw. At noon, local time, the number of deaths from Cyclone Sidr, as it was called, was about 240, according to an official contacted by telephone in the control room of the Ministry of Disaster Management in Bangladesh.

Long vulnerable to nature's fury, Bangladesh is suffering even more extreme weather events like this, following anthropogenic climate change, scientists say. It was too early for officials and independent relief workers to quantify the magnitude actual damage, although it is clear that the standards of Bangladesh, the impact would likely be relatively low.

In 1991, a storm Tropical claimed about 140,000 lives. Relief agencies in Bangladesh have been developed early warning systems and temporary shelters for help people evacuate before disaster. The Associated Press reported that 650,000 people had fled their homes. The storm weakened today. However, it has brought the plight of some of the most vulnerable people in the world. On the Indian side of the Bay of Bengal has been largely safe Delta. Government officials estimated that 100,000 people have fled their homes in search of safety, and if some trees and roofs were blown in the islands known as the Sundarbans delta, there were no victims and people began returning home.

United Nations Development Program, in pressing world leaders to take immediate action to fight against climate change, argues that the increased frequency of droughts, floods and storms is hitting the world's poor hardest and exacerbate poverty in places like Bangladesh. The agency should go out with details in its annual report on human development later this month.

The cyclone flattened thousands of straw huts and fragile mud, uprooted trees, of electricity and telephone poles, and destroyed crops and fish farms in 15 coastal districts, local officials and witnesses.

The areas worst affected were communities in southern Bangladesh, where most victims were killed by falling trees or debris of collapsed homes, while some drowned after falling from ships, Sultana said.
